This pre-prohibition cocktail was the belle of the ball for its striking beauty and bold flavor.

It’s a sweet, tart, and a slightly floral gin-based cocktail made by shaking together gin, Luxardo (maraschino cherry) liqueur, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and Crème de Violette.

That recipe was almost lost to history due to a thirty-year absence, and the seeming disappearance of the Alps-produced liqueur Crème de Violette. For years the Aviation fluttered around without its characteristic violet color. It wasn’t until 2007 when all the original ingredients were reunited, and the Aviation cocktail soared high among the global bartending community.

Be warned, this is a strong drink and is best served as cold as can be. This means it should be shaken vigorously and sipped from pre-chilled glassware. Fasten your seatbelts prepare for take-off.

Nice to know:

Hugo R. Ensslin published the original Aviation recipe in 1916

Aviation American Gin (est. 2006) took its name from this classic cocktail and revived interest in this classic drink.

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds purchased a stake in the company in 2018 and acts as a spokesman for the brand.
